Killifishes - see selected pictures of annual members of the South American family Rivulidae and its biotopes ranging from beautiful, tiny Simpsonichthys to almost everything devouring monsters from the genus Cynolebias.
SAAs generally have six months time to grow, sex out and reproduce, thus they are extremely aggressive. Unique coloration and a fantastic reproduction cycle make them adorable for killi nuts all over the globe.
Here you can see pictures of African Nothobranchidae with the focus on members of the semi-annual genus Fundulopanchax.
Flat loaches are belonging to the family Balitoridae. It’s getting scientific here; you can see various rare species (Homalosoma, Lepturichthys, etc...), the bulk as bodies in alkohol out of different collections.
Among Botiidae there are rather famous aquarium fish. Here you can find images of rare species. Some of them have never been kept in aquaria.
Due to the permanent foraging for food in the bottom and the linked turbid water members of Cobitidae are seldom maintained as aquarium fishes. In China they are widely sold as feeder fish for large predatory fish, especially for Arowana.
Nowadays river loaches are allocated in the family Nemacheilidae. The most specious genus is Schistura. Although the bulk of the river loaches make ideal tank mates some species need to be treated carefully. They are able to bite off eye balls with enormous speed and high accuracy.
See pictures of cyprinids populating different provinces in China with moderate to subtropical climatic conditions. Among them interesting lithophilic Zacco and Opsariichthys. In addition there also species of other geographic regions.
It’s not primarily about fish, but about a raging hillstream torrent in Germany’s Allgaeu. See water pressed through a narrow canyon by an enormous gradient.
The Rio São Francisco does not belong to the amazon basin but empties separately into the South Atlantic. The fauna and flora is referred to as East Brazilian. Typical vegetation forms are the Caatinga and Cerrado. It is the hot spot for annual killifishes and hence one of my favorite destinations.
Insects are not my major interest but there are beautiful creatures wherever you meet them. See some selected pictures of butterflies and moths. The bulk of pictures was taken on Mainau Butterfly Farm, some images hail from natural habitats.
Since I was the first time in Mexico this country belongs to my favorite destinations. Mexicans are friendly, transportation is convenient and inexpensive, the country is vast and possesses an exotic wetland fauna.
Snakeheads of the family Channidae are native to Central, East and Southeast Asia. Some snakeheads are introduced elsewhere and are considered a pest, since they could have adverse effects on autochthonous aquatic fauna.
