Cynolebias gilbertoi Costa, 1998

The specific epithet ‘gilbertoi’ honors Mr. Gilberto Campello Brasil, who found a couple of species new to science including C. gilbertoi. He also act as a coauthor to Costa for various initial descriptions of cynolebiatine fishes. The gender is masculine.

male, max. SL 57.9 mm; female max. SL 50.7 mm (both UFRJ 4804, Costa 2001)
13-15 vomerine teeth; no denticles on gillrakers of the first arch; 12-13 rays in pectoral fin; 31-33 scales in longitudinal series; max. adult size about 60 mm SL (Costa, 2001).
Dimorphism and dichromatophism; tips of anal and dorsal fin pointed and with with filamentous extensions in males, rounded in females; females with slightly fewer rays in anal and dorsal fin than males; all fins hyaline and dark grey blotch in anterocentral portion of flank in females, flanks brown with greenish golden spots in males (Costa, 2001).
Endemic to the Rio Sao Francisco floodplains; 12 km west and 50 km south of Bom Jesus da Lapa, central southern Bahia state, Brazil (Costa, 2001).
Occurs syntop with Simpsonichthys adornatus Costa, 2000 and Cynolebias gibbus Costa, 2001 in E-BR 42-08.
IUCN Red List not evaluated.
Since this species occur in isolated ephemeral pools they are sensitive to changes in the geologic hydrosystem. Intensive water usage for agricultural irrigation purpose is a ubiquitous and serious threat.
E-BR 42-08, GPS: 434m asl, S 13º 05.169', W 43º 30.545', pond on right side of the BA161 towards Sitio do Mato (towards east), ca. 6 km after the access to Malhada Alta (BA576), central southern Bahia state, Brazil (Nielsen, 2008, pers. com.).
