Etymology:

‘Gastromyzon’ is derived from Greek and means bellysucker; ‘gaster’ means belly, ‘myzo’ means to suck; gender: masculine.

The specific epithet ‘aeroides’ derived from Latin and means skyblue; a noun; an allusion to its skyblue colored unpaired fins.

Size / Weight:

Holotype has 38.8 mm SL; largest reported specimen 45.9 mm SL (lot ZRC 47022; 7 ex.); paratype (Tan, 2006).


Diagnosis:

Subopercular groove present but shallow; body and dorsum uniform brown, head with cream reticulate pattern; unpaired fins light blue when alive; head rounded when viewed from above; 47-65 lateral line scales (Sabah population: 56-65, Brunei population: 47-49), caudal peduncle deep (9.5-11.2% SL) and short (6.8-9.6% SL) (Tan, 2006).

Easily distinguished from G. punctulatus Inger & Chin, 1961 by its blue unpaired fins and deeper caudal peduncle.

G. aeroides, G. punctulatus and G. katibasensis Leh & Chai, 2003 are comprised in the G. punctulatus group.


Sex differentiation:

no characters known.


Distribution:

Type locality is the Sungai Malamum, 50 m asl, N 04º 59.120', E115º 37.581', Mengalong River basin, Sipitang county, SW Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia.

Inhabiting clear, well oxygenated, moderate to fast running streams over rock and boulder substratum; Padas River, Kimanis River and Petagas River basins; along the west and east face of the Crocker Range, Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia; Temburong River basin, Brunei (Tan, 2006; ME, pers. obs., June 2009). 


Ecology:

Singly; immobile; territorial; hierarchical fights for best feeding places; benthic; lithophilic; in EW-MAL 17-09 Kimanis River, Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia, syntopic with two balitorids, viz. G. extrorsus Tan, 2006 and Glaniopsis sp.

Clinging to the rock substratum grazing algae and oportunistically aquatic insect larvae; grazing preferably on vertical smooth rock surfaces. Grazing area had an radius of min. 30 cm.

A biotope is the Kimanis River (EW-MAL 01-09, 17-09); a high gradient stream running over boulder and rock substratum, ca. 15 m broad and 1.5 m deep, riffle section 0.3 m deep; 90 m asl, N 05º 32.223', E115º 59.572'; 26.5 ºC, 7.6 pH, 140 µS/cm, 70 mg/l (ppm; TDS) on 2009-06-02, 10:30; 28 ºC, 8.1 pH, 60 µS/cm, 30 mg/l (ppm; TDS) on 2009-06-07, 15:00 (ME, pers. obs., June 2009).

Remarks:

G. aeroides is eyecatching for its coloration of the unpaired fins.
