Protomyzon whiteheadi and closely related P. borneensis can be reliably distinguished by the abdominal squamation and mouth/head width relation.

Road Tambunan-Ranau Waterfall
Road Tambunan-Ranau Waterfall
Road Tambunan-Ranau Waterfall

Leaving biotope EW-MAL 06-09 we headed northward and visited a waterfall situated in pristine rain forest. The way there was half the fun.

The picture shows an awesome balitorid habitat. We did not fish here since we were in a National Reserve.

We followed a path through primary rain forest to reach the waterfall.

Finally, the cataract for local entertainment makes a great visual impact.

There were plenty of Garra; 3-5 individuals shoaling, permanently foraging on the substrate.

Biotope EW-MAL 10-09
Rasbora sumatrana EW-MAL 10-09
Nemacheilus elegantissimus EW-MAL 10-09

Biotope EW-MAL 10-09 is a tributary to the Labuk River.

This is a remarkable balitorid (Gastromyzon) biotope, since it is not even 100 m asl, and has slow current, water temperature at about 29 ºC measured at 30 cm depth. It also has drift wood, which is actually not a feature of a Gastromyzon habitat.

We saw shoals of up tp 10 specimen of Rasbora sumatrana in the upper stratum.

Nemacheilus elegantissimus occurs in shoals of up to 4 specimen; never singly.

Sugut River Road R1

We were crossing Sugut River on Road R1 heading further westward.

Pseudolais tubbi EW-MAL 07-09

This batch of Pseudolais tubbi was also for sale on the market. This species was originally described from the confluence of Deramakot River and Kinabatangan River, Sabah, Borneo.

Gastromyzon introrsus EW-MAL 10-09

Gastromyzon introrsus occurs in the Pedas River and Labuk River basins. There might be a kind of river piracy in the past which allowed the fishes to migrate from one basin into the other.
