Biotope EW-MAL 06-09 was a Protomyzon habitat. They were virtually everywhere. We found two species of Protomyzon.
Juvenile Protomyzon sp. feeding upon detritus along the banks. Photograph was taken through the water surface.
Protomyzon borneensis was found in EW-MAL 06-09 only.
Protomyzon borneensis, lateral view.
Protomyzon borneensis, abdominal view.
Protomyzon whiteheadi, lateral view.
Protomyzon whiteheadi, abdominal view.
Protomyzon whiteheadi and closely related P. borneensis can be reliably distinguished by the abdominal squamation and mouth/head width relation.
Leaving biotope EW-MAL 06-09 we headed northward and visited a waterfall situated in pristine rain forest. The way there was half the fun.
The picture shows an awesome balitorid habitat. We did not fish here since we were in a National Reserve.
We followed a path through primary rain forest to reach the waterfall.
Finally, the cataract for local entertainment makes a great visual impact.

|
|
|
|
A batch of Hypsibarbus wetmorei for sale at the market of Ranau.
This species can be recognized by the presence of barbels, relatively high bodied, orange-reddish pelvic and anal fins.
A commercial spot; we paid for swimming with the fishes. It was nice. Plenty of not shy at all Tor tambra.
This is the east face of Mount Kinabalu, view towards west. In the foreground you can see tea plantation. Tea production is one of the most important branches in Borneo.

This is the Liwagu River; biotope EW-MAL 09-09 is the tributary on the right side.
Garra borneensis, juvenile.
There were plenty of Garra; 3-5 individuals shoaling, permanently foraging on the substrate.
We were crossing Labuk River on Road A4 eastwards. The Labuk River is one of the major watersheds in Sabah.

Biotope EW-MAL 10-09 is a tributary to the Labuk River.
This is a remarkable balitorid (Gastromyzon) biotope, since it is not even 100 m asl, and has slow current, water temperature at about 29 ºC measured at 30 cm depth. It also has drift wood, which is actually not a feature of a Gastromyzon habitat.
We saw shoals of up tp 10 specimen of Rasbora sumatrana in the upper stratum.
Nemacheilus elegantissimus occurs in shoals of up to 4 specimen; never singly.
We were crossing Sugut River on Road R1 heading further westward.
This batch of Pseudolais tubbi was also for sale on the market. This species was originally described from the confluence of Deramakot River and Kinabatangan River, Sabah, Borneo.
Gastromyzon introrsus occurs in the Pedas River and Labuk River basins. There might be a kind of river piracy in the past which allowed the fishes to migrate from one basin into the other.
