Etymology:

The generic name ‘schistura’ is a compound of two Greek words; ‘skhizeîn’: to split, ‘oura’: tail; an allusion to a forked caudal fin; gender: feminine.

Specific epithet ‘amplizona’ is a compound of the Latin word ‘amplus’ for broad and ‘zona’ for belt; a noun in apposition.


Size / Weight:

Up to 90.9 mm SL, type series, Louangnamtha Province, Laos (Kottelat, 2000).


Diagnosis:

Complete lateral line; no notch in lower jaw; lower lip interrupted medially; head slender; caudal peduncle with hard dorsal and ventral keels on posterior half, 1.42-1.69 times longer than deep.

Coloration. Body yellowish with a broad very faint grey midlateral stripe; 5-7 broad blackish brown bars on body, wider than interspaces, wider anteriorly than posteriorly, usually wider on lateral line than on back; black bar at caudal-fin base slightly oblique, restricted to lower two-thirds; a black spot at the base of upper principal rays; dorsal fin with a long black blotch, along base of branched rays only; series of marks on rays of all fins (Kottelat, 2000).

Specimens EPC 0661-0665 obtained from Mengla market, EW-CN 85-10, Mekong basin, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China (ME, 2010-06-05).

Nam Tha and Nam Youan subbasins, Mekong basin, northern Laos (Kottelat, 2000).


Ecology:

no data on ecology available.


Conservation status:

IUCN Red List not evaluated.


Aquarium maintenance:

no reports available.  


Remarks:

This is the first report of S. amplizona in Chinese waters.
